What Human Food Shouldn’t Be Used as Food for Puppies
You want your puppies to be
healthy and happy by giving them enough tasty food to eat. You might even find
yourself sneaking some human treats for them to enjoy occasionally. However,
not all the food we eat is considered safe for puppies. It’s vital to consider
their diet when considering dog
boarding, too.
But what types of human food
shouldn’t be given to puppies? Here are some of them to increase your awareness
and help you avoid them.
Alcohol
Food containing alcohol and
alcoholic beverages can cause decreased coordination, diarrhea, vomiting,
difficulty breathing, depression, and death in animals.
Chocolates, caffeine, and coffee
These products have
methylxanthines. Ingestion causes cause panting, diarrhea and vomiting,
hyperactivity, tremors, seizures, abnormal heart rhythm, and hyperactivity.
Puppies are also at risk of dying.
Coconut oil or coconut
Small amounts of coconut or
coconut oil won’t cause serious harm to puppies, but too much can cause loose stools,
diarrhea, or an upset stomach.
Milk and dairy
Even dog boarding facilities
avoid giving milk and dairy products to the pets under their care. Pets don’t
have enough lactase to break down the lactose in such products, resulting in
digestive problems and diarrhea.
Raisins, grapes, and nuts
There’s a toxic substance in
raisins and grapes that can cause kidney failure in dogs. Nuts are rich in fats
and oils that can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and an increased risk of
pancreatitis. Macadamia nuts are specifically known to cause hyperthermia,
tremors, vomiting, weakness, and depression in canines.
Undercooked or raw meat, bones, and eggs
Raw eggs and meat can contain
bacteria like E. coli and salmonella. The former also has avidin, an enzyme
that can cause skin and coat problems because it reduces biotin absorption in
puppies. Avoid feeding bones to puppies as they could cause choking or injury
to the digestive tract or throat.
Salty snacks
Sodium can cause excessive urination and thirst in puppies. It may even elevate their temperature and cause seizures or result in death.
